Cleaning of sub sea pipeline using Remote Operated Vehicle (RoV)

Adani's thermal Power Station in Udipi needs water for condenser cooling. Being on the coast, the water is taken from the sea. In this particular facility, 1.1 km long underground/sub sea pipeline of dia 1.4 m extended from the Pumping station to the sea. This pipe got fully choked with sand. There is only one point of access. The access is from a manhole on the land.

Sea Dogs was invited to find the solution and get this 1.1 km long pipe cleaned. We responded by developing an RoV which could operate under water. The RoV had brushes forward and aft which could be raised or lowered and rotated. Water jets were also provided to disperse the sand using water pressure. Once the water jets and brushes made the slurry, submersible pump was provided to discharge the slurry aft of the RoV. The sand collected in the manhole. The slurry was removed from the manhole and discharged back into the sea using pumps. A pipeline profiling sonar was used to get the picture inside the pipeline as the cameras were ineffective. A platform was lowered into the manhole with its surface flush with the pipeline. The machine was lowered into the manhole and placed on the platform and aligned with the pipeline. Thereafter, all operations (moving forward or aft, raising or lowering of brushes, rotating the brushes, operating the water jets, operating the pipeline profiling sonar) were done remotely.

It took us about six months to design, fabricate, test and deploy. But we did succeed in cleaning the complete 1.1 km of the pipe line and restore the water flow.
